Speeks with media on Twitter

February 10th, 2009

We made a simple but important update to CitySpeek.com this evening. Many of our users are also Twitter users that choose to have their speeks cross-posted to Twitter. When speeks including integrated media were cross posted to twitter, confusion ensued because only the text was available to Twitter users. You might say “check out this funny picture” and your Twitter friends were left wondering what you were talking about.

Starting tonight however, speeks with media that are also cross posted to Twitter contain a linkback to your original speek. This will allow Twitter followers to easily see your integrated pics or video without being left to wonder what you are talking about. You don’t need to do anything different, the link will be added by us before your speek hits Twitter. Speeks without media will not include a link and longer speeks will be truncated on Twitter to make room for the link.

Give this new feature a try and let us know if you have any questions!

CitySpeek Launches Translation

January 27th, 2009

Bienvenido, maligayang pagdating, 欣然接受, Willkommen!

歓迎, selamat datang, witamy, chào mừng!

Today we are proud to announce the launch of CitySpeek Translate. The world can now speek seamlessly with people all over the globe through one of the most efficient forms of communication ever, micro-messaging. CitySpeek Translate launches with support of over 30 languages including Spanish, Portuguese, German, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, Arabic, and Hindi.

To begin using CitySpeek translate, visit your user settings and navigate to the “About Me” section. Choose your native language, click save and you are ready to go! Anytime CitySpeek Translate recognizes a speek written in a language other than your own, a translate button will appear. Simple as that!

So whats next? Invite your friends, tell the world, follow someone speeking in another language and hang on while we change the game.

Flickr Re-Authentication Required

January 15th, 2009

As you may already know, your CitySpeek account can be linked to your Flickr account for easy archiving of pictures. If you have enabled this feature, any time you post a pic to a speek we will send it to your Flickr photo stream along with the text of your speek.

We were recently approved by Flickr for a Commercial API key which forced us to override our development key. Due to this change, all users will need to re-authenticate their CitySpeek account with Flickr in the same manner you did when originally signing up for CitySpeek.

To re-authenticate:

  1. Log into CitySpeek.com
  2. Click on SETTINGS in the header
  3. Select SOCIAL NETWORK SETTINGS from the drop-down menu
  4. Click AUTHENTICATE near the bottom of the screen, you will be taken to a Flickr page
  5. Follow the instructions given to you by Flickr
  6. Once Flickr sends you back to CitySpeek, click SAVE

Thanks for using CitySpeek.com, please let us know if you have any questions!

You have probably noticed already, but we have made a whole lot of tweaks to the site and have also added a few new features. Below are just some of the changes you’ll enjoy on CitySpeek.com:

  • Your speeks and friends speeks are now combined into one list in your dashboard
  • Added an “Inbox” link to your profile page to access direct (private) messages
  • All groups now have RSS feeds (see our announcement here)
  • Manually typed @reply’s
  • Manually typed @groups
  • Replies no longer cross-post to Twitter
  • On the “Public Speeks” tab, the introduction box disappears after logging in
  • Safari on Macintosh now supported

These are just some of the changes we’ve made and we are not done yet. We are working hard on our next list of enhancements and even have an exciting new feature to roll out soon. We think you’ll love it!

CitySpeek Groups Get RSS

January 4th, 2009

One of the most popular and useful features of CitySpeek.com is Groups. In the few weeks since CitySpeek.com launched, we already boast 33 groups with hundreds of speeks posted through them. Groups vary from Red Sox Fans to a Law Forum and even the Portland Storm Team.

Today we made CitySpeek Groups even more useful by adding rss feeds. Now you can track the activity of any CitySpeek Group with all popular feed readers. When viewing a group page, simply click the now iconic orange and white rss icon and proceed just as you would with any other rss subscription.

Stay tuned to our blog for continued CitySpeek improvements and platform additions.
